It's been over a week since I announced our family's New Years Resolutions. So far, so good. I don't know exactly how much weight I've lost, mostly because I am avoiding the scale. I wanted to do this to change my lifestyle and eating habits. Hopefully the weight loss will just be an added benefit of this. So far I can say that it feels like my jeans are getting looser on me. That is a key item that I wanting out of this.
It is so nice to have the family on board for this venture. It makes it so much easier. I am cooking a lot more too, and from those that know me on this level, you know that I can not cook, but I can bake anything. As Emily once said, "For someone that watches Food Network all the time, you'd think she could cook!". Yes... out of the mouth of babes.
I've been making a lot of things out of the cookbook that Donna gave me. "Sonoma Diet Cook Book". The food has been amazingly good. I made the Garden Pot Roast on Sunday and let's put it this way... The child that thinks her mom can't cook, went back for 3 extra helpings of a dish she "says" she can't stand.
I've noticed a couple of things already.
1. Bready things are giving me heartburn, as well as chocolate. I guess that's not such a bad thing. But the heartburn is bad enough to make me avoid them at all cost.
2. I feel amazingly good. I'm not craving anything. Wait take that back. I craved coke like you couldn't imagine. This weekend, I did break down and had one, but I did split it with someone. But that was only on Saturday, and I haven't had any pop since then.

Good job! you're inspiring me to cook more too - I'm so out of practice I've injured myself 4 out of the last 5 times I've cooked!
ReplyDeleteare you trying to cut down on fat and calories or are you attempting to cut out "bad" stuff like hydrogenated shortening and high fructose corn syrup? Because we are trying to cut out those things and it is H A R D hard! Just eliminating hydrogenated shortening has meant that the kids have had to give up several of their favorite foods.
ReplyDeleteYup, saw Dr. Oz(not sure of his full name) on Oprah the other day. He talked about the big ingredient found in a LOT of food...any word ending in "ose", like fructose,dextrose, and so on.
ReplyDeleteHe says to not eat these things! Okie dokie, I will need to throw out a LOT.
Bread....on the ingredients list on the wrapper, if it says "enriched", get rid of it! Personally, I love the 100% whole wheat breads, they are dense and so good. I had been buying Healthy Choice and it had 3 grams of fiber, but I cannot find it anywhere now!! Red meat, steak for one, it can take up to 3 days to leave your body. Great! He says it basically rots in your system, and then you get rid of it. This is such a lovely thought.
Butter, I know it isn't all that great for you if you over do it. It is one thing I will never give up! It beats the alternative....margarine, which is one molecule away from being plastic!
Milk is good for you! No matter what the lighting in the milk coolers at the grocery store do to the vitamins in it. It is the Calcium in it that we want, and want our kids to have. Calcium is not destroyed by the store coolers lighting. If you choose whole milk, or half%, or 1 or 2%, it doesn't matter as far as the Calcium.....it's all the same straight across the board. Almost 300 mg. of Calcium in an 8 oz. glass of milk.
Avacados, start munching! They are load with fat....the good kind.
Dr. Oz says peanut butter isn't so great. I read an article in Womens World, it said that one TBS. of peanut butter a day is excellent for you! This same article said that eggs are not a culprit either. Their bad reputation is basically not true. The cholesterol in eggs does not hurt you. I believe this was saying up to 5 eggs a week.
Pistachios are good for you....a handful a day.
Salmon and Tuna with their Omega 3 benefits, are excellent for you. I have found a great way to cook Salmon on the grill, and we love it!
The list does go on. Did anyone else see this Dr. on Oprah?
