Dr. Oz was on GMA the other morning talking about heart disease, and American's getting healthy.
One of the things he suggested is something I can do, but need input on.
Eat:
7 servings of whole grains (this is where you come in)
4 servings of fresh fruit
5 servings of vegetables
2 servings of nuts or healthy fats.
HELP! What suggestions can you give me for getting in 7 servings of whole grains in a day? I picture myself making whole grain rice constantly and obviously that isn't an accurate depiction.
What things do you eat or do you suggest I eat to help make that quota?
Boy am I in trouble - because I don't eat ANYTHING compared to those numbers.
ReplyDeleteI do always buy whole grain bread. And I try to buy rice or pasta that is whole grain...
Other than that I have no idea. Check it out on Google, that should give you lots of ideas. :)
Try Granola - I buy Cascadia Farms Organic Granola (dark chocolate almond)from Kroger. It's in the organic section and they have it on sale all the time. I mix this in with yogurt and fresh fruit for a mid day snack..yummm!
ReplyDeleteWe also bought whole grain pancake batter too and I can't tell the difference. Not that we eat pancakes daily, but when we do at least it's a little healthier than Bisquick.
7 servings seems like a lot, but I'm assuming the serving sizes are small??
A serving size is a lot smaller than you would think.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of small changes you can make to get the whole grains. I only buy Barilla Plus pasta which is whole grain but not whole wheat. I couldn't get the kids to eat the whole wheat pasta (and wasn't that hot on it myself) but they don't even notice the Barilla Plus.
Also, there is now a whole grain goldfish cracker you can buy, cheerios has a multi grain ceral that I love, tons of options for whole grain breads and bagels etc... It is a lot easier now to incorporate these things into your diet than even two years ago.
Also, in the freezer section there is bread called Ezekial. That stuff is chock full of whole grains.
ReplyDeleteKatrina, do I bake it myself? Where do you find it?
